Sharon with Commissioners' pledges
Lib Dem MEP Sharon Bowles is today celebrating the confirmation of the new European Commission.
As Chair of the European Parliament's powerful Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, Sharon was in charge of competency hearings for three key Commissioners, including that of Michel Barnier, the controversial choice for Internal Market Commissioner.
Setting herself apart from other Committee Chairs, Sharon asked the Commissioners to each sign a commitment pledge ensuring that they will work closely with MEPs on forthcoming legislation.
Sharon Bowles said:
"Michel Barnier's nomination was received with dismay in the City but then my own appointment was controversial in France. However, I believe he will do a good job.
"Commissioners Rehn, Almunia and Barnier all willingly signed their pledges which ask them to include my Committee in early stage work, with Barnier's pledge focusing on addressing the cumulative impact of the post-crisis legislation program.
"It is not normal procedure for Committee Chairs to demand signatures on pledges but I felt that such assurances were vital in establishing a good working relationship between the Commission and the Parliament."
