Marine Industry Receives Continued Support from Eastleigh MP

October 31, 2013 8:10 PM

Mike Thornton, Liberal Democrat MP for Eastleigh, continued his support and commitment to the leisure marine industry by visiting British Marine Federation members from his constituency last week (Friday 25 October 2013).

The Member of Parliament, who has the largest number of BMF members in his constituency (45), has taken a great interest in the work of the leisure marine industry in Eastleigh looking at specific areas such as export, finance, apprenticeships and key concerns for small and medium-sized enterprises.

After a recent visit to the PSP Southampton Boat Show, Mr Thornton spent the day with BMF members Bainbridge International in Hedge End, and Hamble Point's MDL Marinas and Hampshire Constabulary Special Boat Team.

Mike Thornton MP commented:

"When people think of Eastleigh, they often only think of Eastleigh town and the railway, they don't realise what an incredibly successful area the whole borough is in terms of business. A lot of that is down to the local members of the BMF and the people that work with them.

"It's been really interesting listening to local businesses about what they are doing and the plans they have for the future. And it was an absolute privilege to get out on to the Hamble with the local police team - they are a credit to the Hamble community.

"I know how lucky we are to have such a strong marine industry here, it's vital for exports and for jobs, and is a great advertisement for the whole of Hampshire. I will continue to do all I can to represent local BMF businesses and their workers."

Gordon Coventry, Head of Sales and Marketing at Bainbridge said:

"Working in conjunction with the BMF to assist in highlighting the importance of the Leisure Marine industry in the South by welcoming and introducing Mike Thornton, our local Eastleigh MP, to Bainbridge International Ltd proved to be a positive experience for all.

"Many companies in our industry are relatively small, but collectively, we constitute a major sector of the local economy and it is important that those responsible for representing us at national level are well briefed on the issues of importance. I believe the insight given to the achievements, opportunities and challenges we face on a day to day basis, proved useful for all parties concerned."
