Inspiring the next generation to protect our planet

A ground-breaking project encouraging young people to protect our planet is taking to the European Union stage.

Dr Jane Goodall's Roots and Shoots programme encourages young people to spot problems in their communities and take action.

It has already involved tens of thousands of youngsters from more than 120 countries taking part in a number of campaigns.

MEPs Catherine Bearder, an MEP for South East England, and Silvana Koch-Mehrin, an MEP in Germany, will welcome Dr Goodall to Brussels on Wednesday, May 8.

Catherine said: "I have admired Dr Goodall's work for many years and this will be a great opportunity for MEPs to learn more about her programme for young people.

"Hundreds of young people have also been invited and I hope they will be inspired to get involved."

Silvana added: "I am delighted Jane Goodall visits us in the European Parliament once again. Her interaction with children is impressive. She inspires them and opens their minds and eyes to the importance of individual action."

Dr Goodall is a world renowned primatologist who works tirelessly to raise awareness of the need for conservation, community development and about chimpanzees in Africa.

Roots and Shoots work across the UK with hundreds of schools on a string of activities focusing on animals, people and the environment.

Dr Goodall said: "Roots creep underground everywhere and make a firm foundation. Shoots seem very weak, but to reach the light they can break open brick walls. Imagine the brick walls are all the problems we have inflicted on our planet.

"Hundreds of thousands of roots and shoots, hundreds of thousands of young people around the world, can break through these walls. We can change the world."

The event takes place on Wednesday, May 8, at the European Parliament, Room Paul Henri Spaak 3 C 50, from 10am until noon.
