Mark Oaten Comment in The Independent: Face the facts: prison does not work

1.01.48pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 8th Aug 2007

Liberal Democrat Winchester MP Mark Oaten has has written in today's Independent newspaper about the prison system. Mark slams the state of the current system and its huge overcrowding issues, and calls for "the courage to sweep away prison and replace it with a genuinely radical, innovative alternative".

Mark says:

"The state of our prison system is a national scandal: it is underfunded and under pressure. But it's a function of the malaise that it is no longer headline news that Britain's prisons are more overcrowded than they've ever been. We have a government - an entire political system - that places a premium on modernisation and reform, and yet we are lumbered with a prison system inherited from the Victorians."
