South East MEP Sharon Bowles supports ECJ's tough stance on mobile roaming charges

Lib Dem MEP Sharon Bowles has proffered her support for a European Parliament ruling, upheld by the European Court of Justice this week, which calls on operators to reduce the cost of mobile phone roaming across Europe.

In 2007 the European Parliament ruled that operators should cap the maximum charge for calls made abroad to 29p per minute and 9p per minute to receive a call by 2011.

Despite opposition from the UK's biggest networks, the ECJ said: "The roaming regulation is valid. The community had the right to impose caps on the prices charged by mobile-telephone operators for roaming calls in the interest of the internal market."

Sharon Bowles said:

"I fully support the ruling upheld by the ECJ this week. Operators should not be allowed to charge through the roof for phone calls made or received abroad.

"The EU is not without its critics but a cap on extortionate roaming charges is one of many positive measures implemented by the EU.

"When you think that networks have collected billions of Euros in roaming charges, it is good news that customers in Europe are now able to use their phones without incurring ludicrous costs."
