Sharon condemns Koran burning plan

September 9, 2010 5:30 PM

Sharon Bowles, who represents South East England at the European Parliament, has condemned plans by a religious group in America to burn copies of the Koran.

Pastor Terry Jones, who leads a small congregation of 50 followers in Gainesville, Florida, plans to burn copies of the Koran on the 9th anniversary of 9/11 as a way of standing up to terrorism.

Today the European Parliament added its voice to the growing list, which includes the Vatican and Downing Street, of those condemning the act.

Sharon Bowles said:

"I am appalled at the prospect of a so-called religious group burning the Koran.

"To burn a religious book cherished by millions of people worldwide is a despicable act.

"I hope the actions of one intolerant man and his troupe of misguided followers does not undo the good work being done to promote religious tolerance both here in the UK and elsewhere."
