South East MEP Sharon Bowles welcomes opening of world's largest offshore wind farm in Thanet

September 23, 2010 11:30 AM

Liberal Democrat Sharon Bowles, who represents South East England at the European Parliament, today welcomes the opening of Thanet's new £780million offshore wind farm.

Building of Thanet's offshore wind farm, which comprises of 100 turbines, began two years ago. Running at full capacity, it is estimated that it could generate enough electricity to power 240,000 homes.

There are already 250 wind farms operating in the UK but the Thanet offshore wind farm is expected to increase the UK's wind-generated power supply by 30%, in line with EU targets.

Sharon Bowles MEP said:

'As Kent's representative at the European Parliament, I am very proud that the world's largest offshore wind farm is to be found off the coast of Thanet.

'The UK has been slow in developing wind-powered energy and compared to other countries in Europe we are lagging behind.

'However, this new offshore wind farm at Thanet is a huge leap in the right direction and will hopefully pave the way for future investment in renewable energy.'
